There’ll be a special joint sitting of Members of Parliament on the 6th of February in observance of Grenada’s 50th Independence anniversary.

It’s understood that the Clerk of Parliament has sent out invitations to this effect to MP’s.

The occasion is viewed as being significant with the country moving through its development stages over the 5 decades of having obtained control of its affairs away from colonial Britain.

Gaining Independence, 7th February, 1974, Grenada was in a celebratory mood and the same applies for the half century anniversary, commonly labeled as a golden Jubilee.

It must be remembered on that day, the occasion was marked by a special joint sitting of the country’s Parliament, where Prime Minister Sir Eric Matthew Gairy addressed MP’s and visiting dignitaries, including officials of the British Parliament.

Sir Eric has since been labeled as the Father of the Nation And the first Prime Minister of Grenada.

Grenada has installed 9 Prime Ministers over the past b50 years, with Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, serving the longest of 23 years of his 40-year stint in the country’s Parliament.
