Grenada is today observing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, first established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011 to raise awareness about the abuse and neglect experienced by older persons.

This day’s objective was set aside to promote understanding of the importance of preventing elder abuse and supporting the rights and well-being of older people.

“Closing the Circle: Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Older Age Policy, Law and Evidence-based Responses,” is the theme for the observance.

The general view is that living a life free from harm and abuse is a fundamental human right and an essential requirement for health and well-being and this has to be safeguarded.

Minister of State with responsibility for Social Development and Gender Affairs, Gloria Thomas, says difficulties faced by older people who are experiencing various forms of abuse daily cannot be overlooked.

She says her Ministry understands that abuse of the elderly usually go unreported.

Minister Thomas says the Government of Grenada, through the Ministry of Social and Community Development, Housing and Gender Affairs, is cognizant of the threat abuse poses to older people and has taken action against this scourge.

Minister Thomas says the dignity and rights of older people must be respected.
