Grenada prepare for what is proclaimed as Heroes Day tomorrow, designated a public holiday.

It bears significance as a first-time National commemoration in view of those who lost their lives in the chaotic events of October 19, 1983.

At that time, the Revolutionary Military Council faction in the People’s Revolutionary Army staged a coup toppling the People’s Revolutionary Government, which was led by De Facto Prime Minister Maurice Bishop.

And now, October 19, 2023 is proclaimed Heroes Day

in remembrance and reflection of that fatal day at Fort George, the then Fort Rupert, 40 years ago.

According to the proclamation, the occasion is designed to recognize the nation’s strides in recovery and growth and to promote further healing, reconciliation, unity and advancement as one people.

Among individuals who were slaughtered in the carnage were Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, and his other Cabinet colleagues, Norris Bain, Fitzroy Bain, Evelyn Bullen, Jacqueline Creft, Keith Hayling, Evelyn Maitland and Unison Whiteman.

And among the supporters at the Fort were Andy Alexander, Simon Alexander, Avis Ferguson, Alleyne Romain, Nelson Steele, Gemma Belmar, Eric Dumont and Vincent Noel.

Jackie Alexis, Head of the National Celebrations Committee, says the occasion tomorrow will begin with an Ecumenical Service at the Kirani James International Athletic and Football Stadium.

According to Ms. Alexis, the day will also include a National one-minute’s silence and a nighttime candle-light vigil.
