The Government Of Grenada, in keeping with its stated intention to develop a cannabis industry that will focus on the medical and industrial uses of the plant, is working to develop a comprehensive approach to the issue, ultimately leading to the passage of cannabis legislation.

A new committee is being charged with this responsibility, now headed by Attorney-at-Law, Anslem Clouden.

It further comprises:- Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shawn Charles; Acting Commissioner f Police, Vannie Curwen; Tonja Alexander, a cannabis expert and Rastafarian representative; and Betty Ann Lazarus, Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Forestry and Marine Resources.

REPORT:

The term of engagement of the previously established commission, which was headed by McQueen expired in November 2023, and after careful review, a release says, there’s been need to expedite informed decision-making, whereby the Grenada Cabinet has opted to establish a streamlined Cannabis Working Committee.

The committee is mandated to engage with the Grenadian Community through extensive consultations in order to understand the public’s views on cannabis use and re-classification.

It will also advise on designing a new legal and regulatory framework for cannabis.

It’s to collaborate and work closely with the Ministry of Legal Affairs to research and recommend legislative amendments for cannabis de-criminalization and de-penalization in the initial phase.

The Government of Grenada says it recognizes the experiences of those impacted by current laws and appreciates public enthusiasm.

However, it outlines that a responsible approach is crucial. And, that work in the current construct will take into account all aspects of Grenadian society to be considered while pursuing positive, data-driven progress.

Among other things, the Government speaks of the need to kick-start national conversation and says there’ll be a National Panel Discussion on the issue, bringing together regional experts, offering an opportunity to demystify cannabis and explore the realities of medical and scientific cannabis legalization.
