Grenada Trades’ Union Council Calls On Government To Come Clean On The “Sandals Cluster Spread Crisis

The Grenada Trades’ Union Council (GTUC) says its reaching out to the workers and their families who are being affected by the recent spread of the COVID-19 virus, which authorities say is associated with the “Sandals Cluster.

The Trades Union Council statement comes with the revelation by Health Authorities last Sunday that several people were tested on account of the latest situation and at the time some 26 people turned up positive.

REPORT:

Persons who were deemed to have been exposed on the basis of the Ministry of Health’s contact-tracing method were directed to self-isolate.

It did appear that several community areas would have been affected and the TUC is of the feeling that with all the explanations, the Government and Sandals must take full responsibility for what it termed “reckless behaviour”.

It says it’s not enough for the Officials of the State to seek to shy away from their responsibility and they should be held

accountable for any negative developments that could have been reasonably prevented.

The Trades Union Council is asking several questions, whether Sandals was allowed to accept guests without the necessary tests and clearance being carried out and whether the workers were allowed to interact with the guests, as well as the full extent of the Protocols under which Sandals was expected to function during the Covid period.

The TUC is saying that while recognizing the need to find a balance between “Health and Economics” it has always called for the health, safety and well-being of the Nation’s people to be placed first.

The GTUC demands that Sandals and the Government of Grenada take full responsibility and provide the necessary counseling that will be required to those workers who are affected..

As it relates to the re-opening of the country’s borders, TUC says it was always a concern recognizing the challenges

for Small Island Developing States such as Grenada, about the manner and or conditions under which borders should be re-opened. Sheena Phillip-Lynch, Wee Fm News.
