On this Earth Day, the Grenada Hotel and TourismΒ Association (GHTA) is proud to announce a significant donation of $80,000 EC dollars toΒ the Grenada Conservation Fund. This contribution, made through the TourismΒ Enhancement Fund, will support the construction of a boardwalk and wildlife observationΒ platform at the Woburn Mangrove Restoration Site, a project spearheaded by the GrenadaΒ Fund for Conservation, Inc. (GFC, Inc.).
The Woburn Mangrove Restoration Site, a vital ecological area, has seen remarkableΒ rehabilitation since 2009, achieving over 90% restoration through the planting of diverseΒ coastal vegetation such as red and white mangroves, sea grapes, and almonds. The siteΒ serves as an Important Birding Area (IBA), featuring on the Caribbean Birding Trail, andΒ hosts an annual Caribbean Water-bird Census that has recorded 42 species of resident andΒ migratory birds.
Arlene Friday, CEO of the GHTA, expressed the associationβs commitment to sustainableΒ tourism and environmental preservation. βWe are thrilled to support this initiative,Β especially on Earth Day, which reminds us of the importance of safeguarding our planet,βΒ Friday stated. βThe boardwalk and observation platform will provide researchers, students,Β and tourists with improved access to the Woburn Mangrove Ecosystem, promotingΒ education and appreciation of our natural heritage.β
The proposed boardwalk will be 40 feet long by 4 feet wide, with an 8-foot viewingΒ platform. This structure will enhance visibility of the mangrove ecosystem, facilitatingΒ better sighting and photography of birds and wildlife, and supporting local livelihoods byΒ benefiting Grenadian bird guides. Importantly, the design will accommodate individuals with limited mobility, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. The GHTAβs contribution marksΒ a significant step towards realizing this project for the 2025 tourist season. Ms. Friday added. βBy working together, we can ensure that Grenada remains a premier destinationΒ while safeguarding our natural environment for future generations.β
