OECS Director General Calls For Regional Coordinated Action In Tackling Sargassum

OECS DIRECTOR GENERAL, Dr. Didacus Jules, reaffirms the commitment of the OECS Commission calling for regional and coordinated action in tackling Sargassum which he described as a pressing matter.

He’s suggesting “A joint regional approach, exchange of  knowledge, shared resources, pooled procurement and standardized best practices,” which he says are necessary.

This aligns with the 2018 mandate of the OECS Council of Ministers of Environment, calling for a coordinated, cross-border response to Sargassum management.

His comments come in view of a recent session in which the OECS commission participated in what’s termed the International Sargassum Sequence (ISS) in Guadeloupe, launching a project to tackle the region’s Sargassum challenge.

SARGCOOP 2, as it’s called, will run from 2025 to 2027 with the aim of reinforcing scientific research and observation, developing the value chain, reinforcing regional governance, and strengthening the inclusion of the Sargassum issue on the international agenda.
