Ministry of Health Appeals for Calm – No Confirmed Cases of Measles in Grenada

The Ministry of Health reassures the public that there are currently NO CONFIRMED OR REPORTED cases of MEASLES on the island.

A recent inter-ministerial memorandum shared by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health was intended to provide critical health information, raise awareness, and emphasise the importance of
vaccination in preventing Measles outbreaks. However, the memo made its way into the public domain and has unintentionaly caused concern.

The memorandum outlined the undisputed fact that Measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (brain infection), and, in some cases, death. The Ministry
wishes to clarify that this communication was in no way meant to create unnecessary panic but rather to encourage vigilance and preparedness. Vaccination remains the most effective defence against Measles, and the Ministry urges al citizens to ensure that they and their families are adequately protected.

Furthermore, the Ministry is actively monitoring ongoing Measles outbreaks in Belize, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, given the frequent travel between these countries and Grenada, which increases the potential risk of disease transmission. As such, all necessary preventive and mitigating measures should be carefully considered and implemented to safeguard our community.

The public is encouraged to seek accurate information from official sources and continue practising responsible health measures. The Ministry remains committed to transparency and will provide updates as necessary.
