I was deeply touched by your outpouring of kindness, pride, and encouragement following the announcement of my appointment as Chancellor of McMaster University.
I am profoundly grateful for the hundreds of heartfelt messages, calls, and expressions of goodwill that have come from every corner of the region.
Many years ago, when I traveled from the Caribbean to pursue my studies at McMaster, I was confident that education could open doors and illuminate paths that may appear impossible.
This appointment, therefore, is important not only because it represents an opportunity to serve my beloved alma mater but also because it is a demonstration of the enduring power of education to open new opportunities and transform lives.
My being selected as Chancellor of McMaster University is one of the greatest honours of my life; but, this honour belongs not only to me but also to all of us who believe in the transformative power of education and in the enduring spirit of Caribbean excellence.
I will carry your confidence and pride with me in all I do and I promise to always approach every opportunity in a way that will make you proud.
