The Grenada Public Workers’ Union (GPWU) expresses deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the Customs and Excise Division following the untimely passing of three officers who served within the Division’s main Customs Department: Sister Julia Charles, Brother Neilon N. Franklyn—both of whom were in active service—and Sister Ellen Bain, a former officer.
The Union also extends sympathy to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. In the space of just a few weeks, the Customs and Excise community has been shaken by profound loss, and we mourn alongside them. Each officer served Grenada with honour and commitment, leaving an indelible mark on their workplaces and the nation.
“This is a moment of deep grief,” said President Daisy Hazzard. “These officers left us in their prime, and the phrase ‘Gone Too Soon’ resonates with us all.”
The Union takes special note of the legacy of Brother Neilon N. Franklyn, who served as a Youth Senator in the Upper House of Parliament from June 2022 to September 2024, representing the energy and promise of a new generation of public servants.
As Sister Julia Charles is laid to rest today, the GPWU joins the wider public service in prayer— for comfort, strength, and the sustaining presence of the Holy Spirit during this difficult time.
While loss is part of life’s journey, the sudden departure of colleagues, friends, and loved ones carries with it a lasting sting. We are reminded, however, by the words of 1 Thessalonians 4:13, that “we do not grieve as those without hope.”
The Union also wishes to reaffirm its full support to Comptroller Sister Karen Forsyth-Hall and all officers of the Customs and Excise Division. Professional counsellors—who are also GPWU members—have already pledged their availability to offer grief counselling and debriefing, which will be a vital part of the healing process.
The GPWU encourages all members to remain steadfast in prayer and to actively demonstrate love, empathy, and compassion in the workplace. Let us continue to look out for each other’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
