The Government of Grenada proudly announces participation in the official launch workshop of the Green Energy Efficiency Project, a transformative regional initiative spearheaded by the World Bank, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission, and the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE).
The workshop marked a significant milestone in the shared commitment to enhance energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and building climate resilience across the Eastern Caribbean.
Grenada was represented by senior officials from the Ministry of Climate Resilience and the Ministry of Finance, along with representatives from Grenada Electricity Services Ltd (GRENLEC) and key energy stakeholders.
Grenada stands to benefit significantly from the project through targeted interventions aimed at modernising its energy landscape. Key benefits include:
Reduction in Energy Costs: Deployment of energy-efficient technologies in public buildings will reduce operational expenses and enhance fiscal space for critical services.
Technical Assistance and Capacity Building: Training and institutional strengthening for national agencies to implement and maintain sustainable energy efficiency practices.
Access to Financing for Green Infrastructure: Opportunities to finance clean energy investments, including construction and retrofitting projects aligned with energy
Climate Change Mitigation: Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel reliance supports Grenada’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
Ms. Peron Johnson, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, emphasised, “This project represents a turning point for Grenada’s energy future. Through this partnership, we are not only improving how we use energy but also safeguarding our environment and economic stability for future generations.”
Mr. Alexander Agosti, Senior Energy Specialist at the World Bank, highlighted the Bank’s commitment to supporting Caribbean nations in achieving energy security and climate resilience. “We are pleased to collaborate with regional partners to help scale up energy efficiency solutions that are practical, impactful, and aligned with each country’s unique development goals,” he stated.
Ms. Gabriela Elizondo Azuela, Practice Manager for the World Bank’s Energy and Extractives Global Practice, underscored the broader regional vision: “Energy efficiency is a cornerstone of sustainable growth. This project not only promotes smart energy use but also builds resilience into national infrastructure, helping the region adapt to climate challenges.”
Dr. Mohammad Nagdee, Head of CCREEE, commended the regional momentum behind regulatory harmonisation and technical innovation: “CREE is proud to facilitate the sharing of best practices and technical frameworks that will strengthen the enabling environment for energy efficiency across the OECS.”
GG Ephraim, Programme Director, Sustainable Energy Unit at the OECS Commission, stressed the importance of regional collaboration: “This project demonstrates the power of collective action. By working together, we can unlock meaningful change in how energy is used, regulated, and financed throughout the Eastern Caribbean.”
Government officials from Saint Lucia and Guyana also contributed to the workshop, sharing national experiences and reaffirming their commitment to accelerating energy efficiency in their respective countries.
The Green Energy Efficiency Project aligns with Grenada’s Energy Policy and National Sustainable Development Plan 2020–2035, reinforcing the nation’s vision of a modern, climate-resilient economy powered by clean, affordable, and efficient energy.
The Government of Grenada extends its gratitude to the World Bank, OECS Commission, and CCREEE for their continued partnership and reaffirms its commitment to advancing sustainable energy development for the benefit of all Grenadians.
