The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and the International Labour Office (ILO) for the Caribbean, to host an Entrepreneurship Training Workshop from 13-15 June 2012.

The Workshop, which targets graduates and teachers of the T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC), small business persons, as well as curriculum and education officers of the ministry, is part of a wider Curriculum Refocusing project financed by UNESCO, in collaboration with the Japanese Funds in Trust (JFIT).

It is expected that ILO Specialist on Sustainable Enterprise Development and Job Creation Kelvin Sergeant will act as the main facilitator for the work shop to be conducted at the Allamanda Beach Resort.

The training will take the participants through the steps of conceptualizing good business ideas, to the development of a business plan and organizing and operating a successful business. The legal aspects of business, costing and financial planning will also be examined.

The Workshop’s focus lines up with the Ministry of Education’s vision of well rounded and employable graduates by infusing into the school’s curriculum subjects that seek to address this expectation.

In 2009, Government, through the Education Ministry, decided that the priority should be on the refocusing of the school’s curriculum, to emphasize Personal Development, Technical skills and the traditional Academic Focus. UNESCO, in partnership with JFIT is lending support to the Ministry on this very important initiative.

A short opening ceremony, beginning at 9am, will mark the start of the three day workshop, with speakers from the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, TAMCC and the Ministry of Labour.

This skills training activity is in support of one of the major outcomes of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), 2012-2016, for Barbados and the OECS. The ILO technical assistance is delivered as part of the Decent Work Programme for Grenada and contributes to achieving the outcomes of the UNDAF.
