PR – Attorney Arley Gill, who will be contesting the upcoming general elections in Grenada, says he intends to be a “powerful’’ leader for the Parish of St John, where he will contest the polls as a candidate for the opposition Democratic People’s Movement (DPM).

St John now is represented in the Lower House of Parliament by Kerryne James, Minister of Climate Resilience, Environment and Renewable Energy.

If elected MP for St John, Gill promises that he will be a much better parliamentary representative than James.

“I will provide St John’s with powerful and purposeful leadership,’’ Gill said in a television interview.

A former senator and culture minister, Gill was out of frontline politics for more than a decade.

In recent years, he has been vocal in his capacity as chairman of the Grenada National Reparations Committee, championing the issue of reparative justice for people of African descent at local, regional and international conferences.

A few weeks ago, he attended the inaugural Congress of DPM and was elected deputy leader of the Movement, which is headed by Peter David, Independent MP for the Town of St George.

“I believe that in Peter David, we have the brightest, the best and the most experienced political leader at this time,’’ said Gill.

“More than that, the message of the DPM – even before I became swept by the Movement – you would have heard a message of reconciliation; you would have heard a message of let’s come together and build this country. The DPM, in all of its utterances thus far, has sought to raise the political discourse and debate.’’

Gill, who also is a former CARICOM Ambassador, said Grenada always is first wherever he has served.

“When it comes to country, I put country first, as a nationalist, as a patriot. Personal enrichments and those sort of things do not even come to mind, when it comes to national development. I make sacrifices for my nation in whichever way I can serve,’’ Gill said.

“I believe the world of experience that I have gained over the years, both in public and private life, has put me in a good position to assist Grenada in terms of serious political leadership.’’
