Media workers in Grenada are to receive specialized training in election coverage as the country prepares to vote in a national poll.
A retired Canadian journalist is due to arrive here this weekend to facilitate the training which runs from this Monday to Friday at the Tropicana conference room in St. George’s.
MWAG is hosting the one week media training in collaboration with the Port-of- Spain based Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM), the umbrella body for media associations in the region.
Nick Fillmore will fly in from Toronto and will be assisted in Grenada by Wesley Gibbings, President of ACM.
Mr. Fillmore who was instrumental in the launch of the IFEX (International Freedom of Expression eXchange) Network, has spent more than 30 years working in several senior media positions in radio, television and print in Canada. He has also had considerable experience training journalists, assisting in the rebuilding of media organizations, and promoting free expression and journalists’ rights in over 30 developing countries around the world.
“I think this will be a good opportunity for journalist to benefit from training and receive a good refresher particularly as we prepare to cover General Elections” said outgoing MWAG President Rawle Titus.
“Nick and Wesley are two very experience journalists who know how to pass on skills to journalists. I think this represents a great opportunity to media houses and media workers to benefit, and improve their output. Training like this doesn’t come along everyday” said Titus, who has consistently advocated training for journalist since before his election as MWAG president.
MWAG has invited media organizations to submit the names of at least two
media workers for inclusion on the list of participants for next week’s workshop.
The workshops will be held separately for print and electronic journalists. Journalists in the electronic field would attend the morning sessions while
sessions for print journalists will be conducted in the afternoons.
