Weather forecasters are predicting
nine to 14 named storms, of which
four to seven could become
hurricanes, including one to three
major hurricanes.
The Barbados-based Caribbean
Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA)
has warned Caribbean nationals to be
wary of the hurricanes, saying they
should heed all warnings and plan
ahead “to reduce the chances of
injury or major property damage”.
The CCRIF, the world’s first ever
multi-country catastrophe insurance
pool, was established at a donor
pledging conference in Washington in
2007, after Caribbean leaders sought
World Bank assistance following the
widespread devastation caused by
Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
The World Bank said Caribbean
states, which are highly susceptible
to natural disasters, have only
limited options available to
respond.
